Empowered Learner

Overview

Kahoot! is a free tool for using technology to administer quizzes, discussions or surveys. It is a game based classroom response system played by the whole class in real time. Multiple-choice questions are projected on the screen. Students answer the questions with their smartphone, tablet or computer. These can be made or selected from premade games.

Students will:

  • Be able to respond to Kahoot created questions.
  • Be able to use their smartphone, tablet or computer.
  • Be able to see their results immediately.

Vocabulary Words:

  1. Response: A response is a verbal or written answer.

To prepare for this lesson:

  • Create an account at Kahoot

  • The teacher creates a set of questions and answers on any topic.

    • Select New K! (Purple) in the upper right corner.
    • Select Quiz.
    • Create a Title.
    • Add a description.
    • Add image. This can be your own or from provided photos
    • Click OK Go.
  • Type out question.
     
  • Fill in blanks with answers. Place a checkmark next to the correct answer.
     
  • Click Save when questions are completed.
     
  • Newly created Kahoot can be edited, played, shared or previewed.
     
  • When ready to play click the play button and select how you want the class to play: Classic or Team mode.
     
  • A game pin will be provided for students to enter.
     
  • Student players log on to https://kahoot.it/ and enter the code.
     
  • Kahoot has many video tutorials in their Help Center.

To prepare for this lesson:

  1. The teacher creates a quiz for the students and gives them the game pin. 
  2. Students log onto https://kahoot.it and type in the game pin to play.
  3. They type in their name or nickname.
  4. The teacher will start the game.
  5. Questions show on the screen and students answer by selecting the color shape symbol that corresponds to the answer.
  6. Students can see their points and who is in the lead.

Warning! Produces great excitement in the classroom!

Different options for assessing the students:

  • Observations
  • Check for understanding
  • Kahoot is a quick way to assess what students know or may need help with.

MITECS: Michigan adopted the "ISTE Standards for Students" called MITECS (Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students) in 2018.
